Just wanted to share some personal thoughts regarding this Facebook and super-connectivity age we’re living in. Modern lifestyle: technology and a mixture of voice mails, tweets, sms, whatsapps, posts, blogs, and anything else digital. Super! But it sounds so telegraphic and impersonal to me… I can’t remember the last time I received a personal email from a friend. Just the way we used to write letters. Telling a bit about our own lives, and asking with a genuine interest about the other. And I have to admit that I also hardly ever happen to write one. Instead, I look at piles of friends’ pictures on Facebook. And it’s of course wonderful to see how much fun my friends have had this summer, and how much their kids have grown, and what gorgeous places they’ve visited… I guess looking and occasionally “Liking” friends’ pix is the modern way of maintaining a friendship… But are we really connected? Does a list of hundreds of friends on Facebook makes us feel better about ourselves? And how miserable must be those with only few friends in the list!
In the same line of thoughts, thinking about the mobile (smart) phone, this precious little thing we own and can’t live without anymore. What a wonder to have everyone in our pocket! What a bless to never feel alone! Wait a minute. Has anyone sms’ ed me? Maybe a new email? New voice mail? Have I missed a call? This need to always be available, always reachable sounds kind of desperate to me. In conclusion, I miss the old days of loneliness and isolation.
